Everything in Squiz Matrix is an asset. You can think of an asset as a thing or an object, anything you have uploaded or created in Squiz Matrix will be an asset.
For example a page is an asset, an image is an asset, a folder is an asset and a PDF file is an asset. An asset has a name that can be changed and a unique Asset ID that cannot be changed.
If you upload a photo from your digital camera and it is called "DSC2032.jpg" into Squiz Matrix an Asset ID would be generated. Let's say #24253.
You could rename the file to something more memorable for example "Centenary_Baton_2015.jpg" but the Asset ID would remain #24253.
Links within Squiz Matrix always use the unique Asset ID so are not broken when names are changed.
